I have a 5 inch koi that has suddenly stopped being able to close his mouth.... He/she/it... is not eating and is now floating sideways most of the time. I expected it to die, but it keeps on living... it does intermittent swims around the tank and has no problems doing so, but then returns to it's corner to float sideways. Petstore doesn't know what it is and I could find nothing on the internet. Has anyone come across this?! I'd hate for it do die and would like to help it. What can I do for it, feed it? medicate it?
Thank you!!!!

Re: Help, sick koi!
Sat, September 1, 2007 - 10:35 PMI just lost a bunch of fish that were showing these symptoms.
I accidentally screwed up my water balance and lost all the koi, although the goldfish survived.
Most koi problems start with water quality. Test for ammonia/nitrates.
If the water is toxic the koi could be suffocating and if so it could die very quickly.
If ammonia is high dump in some zeolite rocks (they absorb ammonia) there is also a liquid you can get that drops ammonia nitrate levels.
If you don't have these things, do a water change, but only if your tap water quality is any better. Try a clorine/cloramine fixer on the tap water before introducing it to the fish.
